02MAR - tom's solo album (almost) confirmed

STEF SPEAKS OUT Dagblad de Limburger, a Dutch newspaper, published this week an interview with Stef in which he tells about his renewed collaboration with Tom. They wrote songs together some time ago (there was something about it on this site in the summer of 99), and one of those songs will probably end up on Tom's solo album. Yes: it seems that this rumour is now a fact, and it's expected for release later this year ! (thanks to Maarten Dings)

FREE ZITA GIG And this will be of interest to (some) Zita fans : they will perform a free showcase gig at the FNAC recordstore in Antwerp at 14:30 on Saturday, March 17, the day after their new album Life=A Sexy Sanctuary is released. To get tickets, there's only one way : on Friday 16, the 150 tickets will be hidden inside Zita albums (those sold at FNAC Antwerp, of course). The store will open half an hour earlier, at 9:30, be there early if you want to take a chance. Don't feel like fighting a crowd ? Then connect to www.zitaswoon.com, www.wanadoo.be or www.fnac.be on D-day and enjoy the show through live webcast !

25FEB - tom's schedule for 2001 + tourdates + stuff

KILL ALL HIPPIES First of all, sorry for leaving you without any news for more than one month. I'm afraid this site is maintained by a professional slacker... I have also had problems accessing my mailboxes at university, which means that I've just received messages from two weeks ago. One of them is EXTREMELY interesting, by a guy from RTBF (French speaking state-owned TV & radio).

2001: A TOM ODYSSEY RTBF webreporter Emmanuel Debiève sent me a message on Valentine's Day in which he told me that he'd just published an "instructive" interview with Tom made on the day before. He also wanted to say how much he loved W.W.W.C.S. (3Rd dRAFT) -what a stupid name, it takes too long to type- and that it provided him very useful info before going to Tom's place. I thank him for publishing the URL of my site on RTBF's website, and also for sending me his kind mail. I curse myself for not trying harder to check my mailboxes in due time. Enough of this personal shit, here comes the news :

- Tom will NOT write the music to his film, and he's afraid to see his first movie project surrounded by such huge attention : he doesn't want to be denied the right to fail, although he sees this as recognition. He also describes Friday, Friday Evening as a "soft-neurotic urban comedy".

- Tom is working on a project with CJ Bolland and Peter Vermeersch, but he won't say more. And Steve Dub, the Chemical Brothers sound engineer, asked Tom to sing on his forthcoming dance/big beat album. Tom bought CD's like crazy in 2000.

- Now, to the VERY interesting bit : the interviewer said he gathered information from my site before going to the interview, and he had a WONDERFUL idea. He asked Tom to explain why he said that 2001 would be an exciting year for dEUS fans. Here's the extract : " Normalement, il y a plusieurs trucs qui vont sortir. "
Which means : "Well, several things will be released. Tim Vanhamel's new band, Millionnaire, and Danny's Vive La Fête will both release an album. The project on which I worked with Steve Dub will definitely be released, and perhaps also the one with CJ Bolland & Peter Vermeersch, but nothing's been confirmed. Finally, dEUS might release a box by the end of the year with unreleased tracks, B-sides & stuff. Perhaps a luxury box with our three albums. So, there will be signs of life, more than last year anyway."

- And about the next album : Tom would like it to be what The Ideal Crash should have been - they started with the idea of making something definitely "uptempo, 'in your face', dancy, funky". He wants the next album to sound as if it was not a group's work, something different (reminds me of Radiohead's Kid A), but "Craig was against the idea. Now he's gone ..." They'll start recording in late 2001 or early 2002, as was said before.

- The rest of the article is more about Tom's relationship to music, how he's in awe of Jacques Brel, how he enjoys covering Nick Drake, how much he likes to do many different things ...

I'll translate the whole article tonight or tomorrow.

STILL UNPLUGGED And there's more Tom to come: Saint Amour may be over, but he'll come back soon. On March 2 he'll be in Sint Niklaas, there's some kind of rock exhibition there, but I don't know whether he'll be deejaying or singing. And he'll be back on stage in Rotterdam on March 30, along with other Belgian acts including Gore Slut, Das Pop... Then, there's this bit from the dML: a Greek guy who uses "Brett Tom" as a pseudo says that dEUS will play in Greece in the summer, it's from a good source and he wasn't supposed to talk about it. It's highly unlikely, but if they did, they'd deserve death - why the hell play in Greece and not here ;)

GUTEN ABEND Great news update, hey? Well, this is what you get when you mess with mailboxes. Two weeks ago Belgium All Stars were on German radio talking about the Belgian scene and other stuff. The show was called 'Große Stars für ein kleines Land - Rockmusik aus Belgien' on Rock et cetera, a program from Germany's Deutschlandfunk radio (I might be wrong). Here's a summary sent to the dML by Dirk from the Belpop Archives :

- Tom Barman "the thing in common of all the band from the Belgian scene is perhaps being open to all kinds of influences, and to look on them with a certain surrealism"

- Frank van der Linden about him "discovering" dEUS at the Rock Rally : "in those days you couldn't sell dEUS to any record company, because they were too chaotic. But only a few months after, every record company wanted to have it's own dEUS"

- Tom again "deus was like a sort of cork that came off a bottle. But it is not correct to think that all the bands after us came about because of dEUS. We just gave them a bit of confidence"

- Stef Kamil :"we lived in one house, we made music all the time. I don't know what else to say about it, it was chaotic but beautiful."

- Joost Zweegers of Novastar "I didn't think too much of dEUS, until i once saw a show where Tom Barman & Stef Kamil Carlens played a few encores, just the two of them on piano & guitar. There has never been and probably will never be a better Belgian band than dEUS. But it was not a typical Belgian thing. It was just the magic that happens when two individuals meet. Perhaps the comparison is a bit off, but it was like the magic that Paul McCartney & John Lennon had in the Beatles"

- Tom Barman "I am glad there a still good bands about, but they are a bit "nice", you know. Novastar, Arid ... they don't have the sense of adventure like Soulwax, Zita Swoon, Rudy Trouvé ... us ... Novastar is just Crowded House with more guitars, K's Choice is Skunk Anansie or whatever ... but nothing new. I think it's very positive that they are here, but I want something more from art ... Like Beck manages to do. The next album of dEUS, for 2002, will be a more pop thing. It must be an album you can dance to and have a party with."

- Tom Barman "I earn my money with DJ'ing now! Strange, not. Because I'm not a DJ. People think that because we take a year off, this means we can afford that. But they don't have a clue. When we're touring with dEUS, we can live from it. But now ... But we don't want to make a record because we need money. It has to mean something"

music was of dEUS, Zita Swoon, An Pierl?Hooverphonic, De Mens & Novastar.

DOTCOM ROCKS And Arthur's excellent dEUS site, formerly known as dEUStheband.com, formerly known as Endless, Nameless: dEUS has a new URL and a new name: say hello to I Suffer Rock (www.isufferrock.com), named after the best dEUS B-side ! The design hasn't changed, but there are several new message boards (the "I Suffer Rock Community") about dEUS of course, but also Zita Swoon and other related fora.

25FEB - www.zitaswoon.com goes online

CYBERSTEF The official Zita Swoon website is online, and it's a thousand times better than www.deus.be. Extremely flashy(r), easier to use than the Soulwax site, but at least as funny - just try the Audio Lab section, we want more ;) The new single Hot, Hotter, Hottest was released 9 days ago, the new album Life = A Sexy Sanctuary will be out on March 16, and one week ago, Zita Swoon played a private gig in Ghent. Marie Man (the Unofficial Zita Swoon Page) reports ...

It was in the Minard, a small theatre in Gent. There were a couple of hundred people there. Looked liked lots of locals were there. It turns out that they were mainly friends, including the ex-guys of Musickness and Koen from Plage tattoo.

Above the right side of the stage was a huge painting of a skull - the new Zita logo?? Soon enough the band came on and broke into a series of new songs. Quite rock - punk rock my friend says! The stage is lit up with lots of LED style lights - flashing arrows, circles of light....shame about the rest of the lighting!

The new songs were very full on and guitar based with a good dose of sampling...more in the direction of Disco! They played about 4 or 5 of these, and a song from Circumstances - comparatively mellow. Maybe I can try to do a tracklisting later. After that they did what I think is the B-side to the new single, 'Moustache' - it's almost spoken like some of the Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart songs. About being in the back of a car where the driver and his girl are kissing, then kissing more than driving and you think they will crash. But eventually it flies...psychedelia!

For the encore they did an excellent reprise of a 'Greasy Feather' song - I can't remember which (I enjoyed this the most), but will find out, another new song I think, then Disco! I was surprised by this.

After about an hour - the concert ended and there was a mini-party. I didn't really know anyone there - except Rudy and a girl that was going to be in Plage Tattoo, but then I really don't know so many people from Belgium, so...

I guess that's all for now. Anyone with anymore Zita news, send me a message and I'l lgive you credit on the site. I have a big headache, so'll be off for now...

The Swoons will be on tour in Europe very soon, they are back in Ghent on 28 Feb. and they'll rock Brussels on 5 April. By the way, tickets are very expensive, they're nearly as dear as dEUS ones. But ZS gigs are among the best live performances you'll catch !

14JAN - another new song !

EVERGREEN Quinten Van Wichelen (Rudy's Great Idea) told me that Tom was invited on StudioBrussel on Wednesday, where he debuted a new song called Evergreen. And in an interview with De Standaard (11 Jan.) which was on display at De Nachten, Tom says several interesting things, which Arthur summarised on isufferrock.com :

Tom says that he enjoys playing acoustic sets. Learning covers with the band would take a long time, while it takes 20 minutes for Tom to learn to play them solo. Tom says he's working on new songs, but he's not sure yet what's going to happen to them. He's working on one song together with Guy Van Nueten (The Sands/Dago), who's previously worked with dEUS on 'The Ideal Crash' (on keyboards). Apparently Tom's very happy about that song, but he feels it still needs a female choir... Tom has confirmed what has been reported on this site for some time now: dEUS won't get back together before the end of 2001 and recordings are expected to commence in 2002, which could mean a possible release of a 4th album at the end of 2002.
According to newspaper 'De Morgen' Tom is involved in a project with CJ Bolland and Peter Vermeersch (X-Legged Sally). (...) This project appears to be the previously mentioned project with "an Englishman" (...), as CJ Bolland was born in England.

I'll add to this that some Zita Swoon release dates have been confirmed : a new single called Hot, Hotter, Hottest on 16/2 and a new album called Life = A Sexy Sanctuary on 16/3. Uh, Stef's libido is at its climax.

08JAN - new dates for tom solo

TOM ON STAGE Here's a very interesting info posted by Free Claerbout on You're Stepping on My Sun, this site's forum. A poetry/literature/music festival called Saint Amour will tour some Flemish cities & Brussels in February. Is this relevant ? Oh yes, since Tom will take part in the event ! The festival kicks off on 21 February at De Werf in Aalst. Here are the other dates, with phone numbers for more info (it's not sure whether Tom will perform on ALL dates) :

10/2 in CC De werf in Aalst (053/732812)
13/2 in Gent (Kunstencentrum Vooruit 09/2672828)
14/2 in Leuven (Stadsschouwburg 016/222113)
15/2 in Tongeren (CC de Velinx 012/393800)
16/2 in Mechelen (CC A. Spinoy 015/294000)
17/2 in Brussel (PSK 02/5078200)
18/2 in Knokke-Heist (CC Scharpoord 050/630430)
19/2 in Antwerpen (Bourla Schouwburg 03/2248844)
21/2 in Torhout (CC De Brouckere 050/221150)

DE NACHTEN From Quinten Van Wichelen : This weeks local antwerp magazine 'zone03' has a small article about De Nachten next week. Tom Barman is being interviewed, and he says he's gonna do a 100% acoustic set, all alone, and a combination of covers, old songs and -yippie-yay-, new songs. Hopefully it'll be more than one this time. He also says he's really excited about playing in Antwerp, because he hasn't performed here since 1997 (believe it or not) Oh, and he's eager to go see Add N to (x) and Mintskov Luna. Hurrah!

03JAN - tom speaks to humo

EXCITING YEAR Tom said that 2001would be an exciting year for dEUS fans. He tells a little more about this in an interview that was published yesterday in the latest issue of HUMO. I haven't had the chance to read it yet, but Free Claerbout sent me his own summary :

2001 -> Full Throttle again. Tom Barman will release a compilation CD, he has a project with 'an Englishman', and in between there has to be searched for a new guitar player for dEUS, though Barman claims he has met 'a nice clarionplayer' that could fit into the band.

This is very obscure ...
Compilation CD = Best of dEUS ?
Project with an English guy = Tom's solo album (with Luxury, the new song) or something totally different ?
New guitar player ? And we thought Tim Vanhamel would step in as permanent member ...
We dEUS fans shall be patient in what we hope will be a happy new yEAR.

HOTEL GONE TO HEAVEN A very sad piece of news : Rudy's label Heavenhotel has gone bankrupt. More about this on Rudy's Great Ideas.

10DEC - tom solo: new dates / a xMAS gift

WE WANT LUXURY If there's a festival you can't miss in 2001, then it has to be De Nachten at the Singel in Antwerp. Tom Barman will play there on 12 January (it's on a Friday, Friday, ...) and according to this article, he'll do a tribute to Nick Drake. Of course, he'll also play dEUS songs and, who knows, another new song ? Other acts include electronoise terrorists Add N to (X), support act when dEUS played at Les Halles in October 99, Die Anarchistische Abendunderhaltung, A Silver Mt. Zion (GYBE! side project), but also Gore Slut, Sophia and Mauro. Plus a few dozens more, and a surprise act (and as usual, we all hope that will be dEUS, but we are stupid naives). More info on this ugly official website. It is also rumoured that Tom will play during De Langste Nacht, a huge party held on New Year's Eve at Flanders Expo in Ghent.

CHRISTMAS SONG You are probably new to this world if you don't know that John Lennon died 20 years ago (he's everywhere and it bores me to death - George Harrison rules). Studio Brussel is commemorating this anniversary with hours of Lennon-related specials, and the infamous Das Pop (well, I really don't like that 60's ripoff) have invited the stars of the Flemish music scene on their own cover of Lennon's Happy Xmas (War is Over). Celebrities include Tom & Stef, Mauro, the Soulwax brothers, Arno, Arid's singer and many others. Well, that's a dEUS-related sweet before seeing Tom on stage next month, and Zita Swoon in February. Check the audio section at dEUSTheBand.com to hear the result. It's extremely naive :)

12NOV - excitement in 2001 / reggae tom

In an interview with Tom published in this week's HUMO, he says that 2001 should be an exciting year for dEUS fans. What will be the source for this excitement ? I have no idea, but it could be a soundtrack album for Tom's movie, or a solo album with new songs written by Tom on his own, or perhaps a few unreleased songs on a new dEUS CD (I'd love to see such a thing).

TOM ON STAGE Yesterday night at the Ancienne Belgique, Tom and Stef were among the friends invited on stage by Arno at the Amnesty International concert. Stef covered two Bruce Springsteen songs and Tom sang on War, a reggae song, and on Cold Sweat & The DJ Saved My Life he sang with an amazing black woman (didn't get her name).

06NOV - Luxury, a new deus song !

LUXURY On Saturday, Tom played a new dEUS song called Luxury at the Crossing Border Festival. According to Tessa who posteda message about it to the dML, it's a very good & catchy song. What did you expect ? :)

05NOV - new daan album / new message board

DAAN Pedro Pereira knows things about Dead Man Ray's frontman :

Daan - Verboden Te Zuchten: It's Daan's latest release. A soundtrack for a film by Alex Stockman, with 19 songs incluing a new version of 'Convertible Chaos' from his debut solo album 'Profools'. Don't excpect the same thing as the first ablum. This is a soundtrack with a ot of instrumental songs and some sketches from the movie's dialogs. Really interesting details on the songs; defenately worth buying!

EXPRESS YOURSELF Okay, you can now mess around with my new message board. It's a great thing, really! Powered by an almost unknown website called swisstools.net, it has great features, and even better, there's no login required. Eef, Gomez and all the others, rush to be the first to post :) Oh, I'll try to recover all messages from the old message board and put them into a 'board archive' page on this site.

23OCT - death of a message board

BAD NEWS The guys at CGIFreebies, my "message board provider", have just updated their site, and it seems that they messed up ALL message boards they hosted ... I'll try to repair the damage as soon as possible ! It might work, but if it doesn't, don't cry and send me a mail.

15OCT - arno & tom & stef / tom solo on radio

GREAT GIG If you read the news item from 23 September, you already know that Tom will be one of the "friends" who'll play with Arno on 11 November. Stef Kamil Carlens will also be there ! See you all at the Ancienne Belgique on that day. It's 750f, but remember all profit will go to Amnesty International. Tickets for sale on the AB's site.

AUDIO FILE Tom was a guest of Dutch radio VPRO's program "Plantage" on October 8. He covered a song by Joni Mitchell called River. You can listen to a RealAudio recording on VPRO's site : here we go !

23SEP - que sont-ils devenus ?

Welcome back, and sorry for leaving you for one month without any news !

TOM ON STAGE If you read the [wwwcs3] message board from time to time, you already know that Tom will play an acoustic set at the Crossing Border festival in Amsterdam (not Den Haag anymore, thus) on 4 November. To be a little more precise, he'll play from 21.55 to 22.40 at the Theater Bellevue. But one week later, he'll also be on stage with Arno for an Amnesty International special evening at the Ancienne Belgique ! Other friends to play with Arno that night include Axelle Red (a friend of Tom's, too) and Jean-Luc Fonck, aka Sttellla, a crazy guy from Wallonia who has a taste for great, kitsch music.

TOM AT WORK Tom worked with Peter Vermeersch (WCS producer) and Jean-Marie Aerts (Arno's band) on a piece of music used for Eric Kint's "My Transhuman" documentary. Don't ask who Eric Kint is, I have no idea. [thanks to Bert Cielen, again]

RUDY THE FASCIST DICTATOR Rudy's still rolling ! Dead Man Ray's next stop will be in Antwerp on October 7, and there will be a special Heavenhotel night at the Ancienne Belgique on Thursday, November 9, featuring Gore Slut and F.S. De Bakker (click here). And when he talked to dML member Pedro Pereira, Rudy said that a new Gore Slut album was on its way, as well as something by Lionell Horrowits scheduled for somewhere next year. There's also enough material for two Cynthia Appleby records, so Rudy will probably release a debut CA album soon. A break for Rudy ? He wouldn't even give that thought five seconds :)

GAINSBOURG COVER Serge Gainsbourg, a drunk French songwriter who died in 1990, is going to be honoured on a tribute album entitled "Lucien" (his real first name). dEUS will record a song, which seems contradictory with recent news that the band members are currently enjoying a, to say the least, long break. They might do it, though, so my guess would be "Requiem pour un con", a song that Tom likes to sing during Hotellounge : écoute les orgues, elles jouent pour toi ... Other contributors should include The Walkabouts, Vive La Fête, Nick Cave, Pulp, Pizzicato Five (ultracool Japanese band), Air and Enrique Bunbury. Label is Pussycat Records, release date is sometime in October. Wait and see. And thanks to Santiago for saying it all on my messageboard ;)

The following bits of news were rewritten from Arthur's deustheband.com website, formerly known as Endless, Nameless: dEUS. Do I believe in outsourcing ?

JULLE, DANNY AND CRAIG Julle & Danny are still touring with Vive La Fête, but it seems that VLF are not splitting despite Danny & Els's breakdown. Craig played some guitar on the Tindersticks' forthcoming album, he's producing The Frames's next album and has been asked by Scottish punkrock band Idlewild to produce theirs. No news from Klaas, so I hope he finally decided to make a record of his own - remember that Let's See and A Shocking Lack are sort of his dEUS songs.

TOM'S MOVIE Lucky Tom! His application for a subsidy from the Flemish Film Fund was accepted, in short he'll get money for his movie - he might also get something from Dutch VPRO TV, which will certainly broadcast the movie when it's finished. Originally dubbed "Vrijdagavong, zaterdagochtend", Tom's brainchild will probably be called "Vrijdag, vrijdagavond" instead. As announced on deustheband.com, with a very interesting piece on the agreement between Island Records and dEUS :

Tom Barman's first feature-length movie, initially titled 'Vrijdagavond, zaterdagochtend' (Friday evening, Saturday morning), will now be called 'Vrijdag, vrijdagavond' (Friday, Friday evening). Sounds kinda familiar, doesn't it? (Friday! Friday! Friday!)
According to Flemish Film Fund ('Fonds Film In Vlaanderen') committee member Godfried Van de Perre, the request for funding has received a positive advice, after a hearing with Tom Barman. Which means Tom has a 95% chance of receiving funding from the Flemish government for his movie project. Producing company Corridor has asked 20 million Belgian Francs (approximately 430.000 dollars) for the project and it could turn into a Belgian/Dutch/English co-production. Tom will know for sure if the Flemish Film Fund will help fund his movie between October 1st and November 1st. Several media have been spreading rumors that this could mean the end of dEUS. dEUS manager Filip Eyckmans recently mentioned in the Belgian newspaper 'Gazet van Antwerpen' that he would rather see Tom's movie made than a new dEUS album. He also said that if this would mean the end of dEUS then that would be ok.
Previous to the release of 'The Ideal Crash', dEUS signed a two album record deal with Island Records, which means Island could still release at least one more dEUS album. So the future of dEUS could hinge on this record deal. If Universal/Island will give Tom the chance to finish his movie, a new dEUS record could be released on Universal/Island in the second half of 2002 at the earliest. If they're not prepared to let Tom work on his movie project however, dEUS might have to look for a new record company, or they could call it an end. For the time being however, Tom has said he intends to continue working on his film script and music from now through May 2001, when he intends to start filming until the end of 2001. There's definitely not any confirmation of a dEUS split, just a prolonged break. dEUS are currently planning to get back together early 2002.

24SEP - extra mixture rishocket

ZITA SWOON
It's flashy !
It's fun !
It's brilliant !

It is the official Zita Swoon website, an amazing thing entirely written in Shockwave, with lots of personal input from the band members, the site we'd love to see from dEUS.

The ZS site hasn't been launched officially yet, but it's entirely available already if you type http://zitaswoon.com/index2.htm - enjoy !

DEUS FANS And there's a new dEUS fans community, this time it's on ICQ and it's run by Eeva. You have to register, which means some hassle, and it's not very popular yet ... personally, I'd rather stick to the [wwwcs3] message board, it's going very well, I'm rather happy about that :)
But you're free to join anything, so here's Eeva's message to the dEUS mailing list :

I would like to invite you to join our ICQ Interest Group - dEUS.
By becoming a member of the dEUS ICQ Interest Group you can join us for a chat, get to know people who share your interest, and become a part of the best and up to date community on the Web!

28AUG - defining priorities / instant nokia

Interviewed this weekend in Gazet van Antwerpen, a newspaper, Filip Eyckmans, dEUS manager and owner of En Frente Arte in Ronda, said that Tom's movie project was what mattered most to him and Tom at the moment. Provided they raise enough money, "Vrijdagavond, zaterdagochtend" will be their highest priority for the next few months. But Filip also said that dEUS might be back on track quicker than expected, if the project is a fiasco. Oh, no new album until 2002 : it's official now. [thanks to Bert Cielen]

And for those of you with a Nokia mobile and free time ahead, here's leisure time provided by Menno Echnie ! If the following makes sense to you, then your phone will ring with Instant Street next time someone calls you :)

it's quite easy once you get the hang of it

I'd be the first to believe Menno is right, but I have an Ericsson and it seems happy when playing its Smashing Pumpkins tune ;)

Oh, there's also a new unofficial dEUS site going on, called dEUS Online and it's located at http://deus-online.tripod.com/. Webmaster is Vangelis Dalietos, from Greece. Nice looks, wait and see how it evolves ...

25AUG - solo projects / the ugly banner / zita swoon

Tim Vanhamel (girlfriend's name is Hannelore Knuts) is currently recording an album with his band called Millionnaire. According to Tom, it is a really great piece of music. And his colleague in Evil Superstars, Mauro Pawlowski is in the US recording his solo album with producer David Sardy from Barkmarket, who produced Evil Superstars' second album.

As for Tom himself, he was awarded a subsidy for making his movie Vrijdagavond, zaterdagochtend, so I think he's already at work. According to Matt from the mailing list, he might also record a solo album. Any future for dEUS ?

As for Klaas, he's apparently just bought a house and a bar in Antwerp.

And ... you see that banner on top of this very page ? Well, I'm not responsible for that. My free web hosting server citeweb.net has decided to use advertising to finance its costs. It's okay for them, but I don't like it at all. So, I'm currently looking for another server, for which I'll pay, but it's okay since I'll use that webspace for many other purposes than this site. Oh, it also means that you're likely to experience some trouble connecting to this site in the next few weeks.

Zita Swoon are currently recording their next album at home ; this will be their 5th one if you take Sunrise & Plage Tattoo into account. It should be released in January. You should also be aware that the Zita Swoon homepage has moved and is being redesigned by Marie Man who's acting as temporary webmaster. The new URL is http://www.mandarinmedia.com/zitaswoon. Zita Swoon's official website isn't available yet. It seems that the designers are too ambitious and the site is going to cost more than was expected.

To make some jealous : I found two more dEUS promos, the orange version of Sister Dew and The Ideal Crash with a misprinted tracklist. Both were already listed in the discography, though. I'm poorer, but happier :)

08AUG - tom's movie / tom in dranouter

Here is an article published yesterday by De Gentenaar. Liesbeth from the dML played the translator.

" TOM BARMAN'S FILM IS TAKING SHAPE

"There are more details revealed about the filmplans that dEUS-frontman Tom Barman has for a few months. The script of his first long-play film, 'Vrijdagavond, zaterdagochtend' (Friday night, Saturday morning) is ready. The story is about seven people who spend the night in a very different way, in Antwerp. The next morning the seven characters meet each other.
"Barman has a few actors in mind like Dirk Roofthooft (Hombres Complicados), Natali Broods (who made her debut in Guido Hendricks' controversial 'S') and Frank Vercruyssen (Manneken Pis).
"Barman, who studied film in Brussels, put his project before the film committee. If they give him subsidies, Barman might start at the beginning of next year with the shootings."

And last Friday at the Dranouter festival, it seems that Tom did more than just playing an acoustic show. He invited other artists including Axelle Red. A Standaard journalist is very enthusiastic about the show. This is now history - this is now part of the tour archive !

04AUG - news from the world

Tonight around midnight, Tom will be playing at the Dranouter Folk Festival. But he also played two weeks ago during the Gentse Feesten, which I didn't know, but you all knew it from Arthur's site, didn't you :) Ah, this shows what happens when lazy webmasters don't update their sites for months ... Sadly, Tom did not play any new dEUS song, but covered songs from Elliot Smith, Joni Mitchell and Palace among others. This is why I'm not going to Dranouter : there's no fun in watching Tom feel nostalgic ;)

As for the next album, Klaas recently told a member of the dML that there won't be a new album before 2002. This seems to confirm what Danny already announced in April. Well, time to listen to other great bands ... I'm suffering from a terrible Pink Floyd mania these weeks :)

What else ? Dutch musicmag OOR asked Tom to make a mini photo-album, or something like that. I don't really know what exactly it is, but Menno sent me a bunch of scanned pictures which you can find here.

Coming next on [wwwcs3] : interactive polls thingies, totally redesigned navigation without frames, more interaction with other dEUS sites, and of course new dEUS content including tons of pictures from concerts & magazines, a bunch of interviews I have to type up, and perhaps English translations of the latest interviews. Live music, too, cause I'm moving to a steady 100 Mb server, which is not huge but will help. Sounds great, eh ? Well, I hope I'll manage to keep my promise :)
Not really news anymore : Tom was invited in May or June by video underground artist Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven to make a video shoot [MORE...]
27MAY - deus concert in august ?

The Dranouter Folk Festival is an alternative world music festival in Belgium. I've never been there, but I must say that they always have some great bands playing. Last year, they had Zita Swoon & Nick Cave for instance. This year, Tom Barman & Friends will perform on 4th August. Mmmmh, I'd really like to know who those friends are ... Remember : dEUS played under different names in 1996, and in 1998 they played a handful of hardly official gigs. Wait and see.

Belgian fans : just in case you haven't heard about it, Radiohead are coming ... They'll play in Werchter on September 11. Too bad the gig takes place in a huge marquee ... It's 1200f + a reservation fee, click here to order (no, I ain't getting anything from this - I just love Radiohead). Ah, if only they could do Pukkelpop instead ... Beck will play on August 16 btw, same place.

15MAY - what's tom doing ?

Stelios from the dML sent us an interview with Tom by someone called Steven A.J. Beijer. After months of silence, it's rather refreshing. Mr Barman is currently very busy with the movie he hopes to shoot in September. The next album is still a very secret thing : "Well, I can?t really say, cause I am really not busy with that at the moment. Everybody is a little bit dispersed and doing other stuff. I am working on it in my head, but it is still very abstract, nothing I wanna share with anyone yet. But its definitely gonna follow in the footsteps of all our work, just like all three albums have been different, I think the fourth one is going to be completely different again" [MORE...]

19APR - new album: wait till 2002

According to an interview with Danny published by webzine Nameless, dEUS won't start recording their 4th album before 2001, and we will have to wait until 2002 to see it in the stores ... In the meantime, listen to Dead Man Ray's Trap, their new album will probably be remembered as the best Belgian record of the year two thousand [MORE...]

26MAR - new links section

I got fed up with my unpractical links section so I made a new one, with a picture for the more interesting sites and a mere link for the others. [MORE...]

11MAR - dEUS goodies - not for sale

After receiving quite a lot of mails asking for info about T-shirts and other dEUS merchandise, I decided to make a page about all dEUS items that are not records. [MORE...]

08MAR - New Zita Swoon record

Ex-dEUS singer Stef Kamil Carlens's band Zita Swoon have just released the soundtrack of their 1999 theatre/dance project Plage Tattoo/Circumstances. Both Rudy Trouvé and Daan Stuyven helped !

08MAR - Doe Maar cover : not yet ...

Pa, the song dEUS covered for the Doe Maar tribute album Trillend Op M'n Benen is NOT on the Belgian version of the album either ... So we will have to wait a little more before we hear a new dEUS song.

08MAR - Viking Dave's new band

Kiss My Jazz may have split up, this does not mean that its members will be idle slackers from now on. Viking Dave Robertson, brilliant singer in KMJ, is in a new band called Wall Of Sweat, who might also include Rudy ...

13FEB - Doe Maar cover

Due to copyright problems with the samples used, dEUS didn't finish their cover of Doe Maar's Pa in time for the release of the tribute album Trillend Op M'n Benen. Fortunately, the Belgian version of the album will be released later with the dEUS cover on it. From what I've heard, it is brilliant.

13FEB - Vive La Fête & Dead Man Ray : new albums

Danny's band Vive La Fête have a new album called Attaque Surprise. Like it or hate it, the album exists.
More interesting, Rudy's Dead Man Ray will have their second album released in a few weeks. The first single Toothpaste is brilliant !

06FEB - Craig Ward leaves dEUS - true ?

Flemish radio Studio Brussel announced last week that Craig Ward left dEUS because he wants to spend more time with his wife and his other projects. But Kevin Moens aka Mr dEUS Fanmail said it wasn't true and dEUS were merely taking a break. True or not, it's been known for a long time that Craig was growing bored with dEUS and in April I wrote about his possible departure on this site. Wait and see.

01FEB - Kiss My Jazz, a shiny chapter of music History

Wonderband Kiss My Jazz played their farewell gig yesterday in Utrecht (NL). It is a sad thing for Belgian music that one of our best bands should break up, but there's a good side : who knows how many interesting new bands will be created ?

02DEC - New dEUS stuff coming

Last week, Tom was on the radio show "club Brussel" and, besides playing two songs from TIC, he made a few interesting announcements :

- dEUS (without Craig or Julle) are recording own version of "Pa", a song by Dutch reggae/pop band Doe Maar. Their cover will appear on a Doe Maar tribute album which should be released in January ("Trillend op mijn benen")

- dEUS will also appear on a compilation called "Glittering the millenium" with various Belgian artists covering songs from the glam rock period (Bowie, Suzi Quatro, Mud, T-Rex, The Sweet ...). Zita Swoon, Arno, Telex, Sttellla, Marc Morgan, Machiavel will also do their bit. That CD should be available in early 2000.

- Tom will shoot a kinda experimental movie this month, without any proper beginning nor end. (thanks to Dirk Houbrechts for all this)

07NOV - New single : The Ideal Crash

The Ideal Crash was released as dEUS's new single a few days ago. Unfortunately I don't know yet what the final tracklists are. I think it is something like this : one CD with The Ideal Crash (radio edit), Everybody's Weird (Soulwax remix) & Snuck Out, the other with The Ideal Crash (album version), Instant Street & Put The Freaks (live @ Steve Lamacq's BBC Evening Session). [MORE...]

07NOV - The Ideal Tour is history

Two nights ago dEUS played their last concert until 2001. In the meantime, my tour archive will keep on expanding with hundreds of live pictures, setlists, reviews - but this site is YOUR dEUS REFERENCE, so keep sending stuff, you won't regret it ! [MORE...]

06OCT - MP3's : bye bye till the next time

You've probably noticed ... The MP3's I put online at the end of August are gone already. Is this some sort of war ? But I left the links to other sites featuring dEUS audio files.

30AUG - New design & functions

If this is your first visit to W.W.W.C.S., heartly welcome ! Make sure you bookmark this site before you disconnect. And you my old friends, I hope you like this new page. I wanted something easier to modify and much faster to load. And I think it's easier to use, too ... You preferred the previous home page ? Please tell me why ! By the way, these changes actually mean that this is the 4th version of my dEUS site, so it shouldn't be called W.W.W.C.S. (3Rd dRAFT) anymore. But I don't want to drive myself crazy, so it will remain WWWCS3.
I have also started a "dEUS dictionary". That is where I'll put info about dEUS related terms that are often used on this site, but I didn't know where to write something about them, so I made that new page (take a look)

29AUG - help me

First, an unusual request ... I really spend lots of time to keep this site as up to date as possible and as complete as the Encyclop?a Universalia, I offer MP3's (when "they" let me), and so far I've asked nothing from you, my beloved readers. So, just this : any bootleg tape or CD-R is welcome as a sort of "subscription" to WWWCS. Of course you are not obliged to do it, but since I do it for fans' sites I like ... mail me.

31JUL - dEUS stop

Don't commit suicide, dEUS are going to stop but only for a while. They'll take one year off after The Ideal Tour is over (i.e. this autumn) so "everybody can go his own way for a little year". Which means for Tom playing and writing songs with Stef (yeah), for Danny recording new songs for his bands SexMachines and Vive La F?, and I think for Craig being a good husband in Scotland, for Klaas recording new weird thingies and for Julle some painting ...

what's new on this site ?
