Tom
Barman performed an intimate concert on November 5th at the HQ Press,
Hall Of Fame in Dublin, Ireland. There were about 100 people, the
same number as the amount of available seats. There was little advertising,
no posters in the streets and neither in front of the HQ, which
made for a very selective audience, "first line fans"
only. Tom, accompanied by his acoustic guitar (the one he usually
uses with dEUS), presented us a beautiful performance with dEUS
songs and covers which he usually plays like JJ Cale's "Magnolia"
and Serge Gainsbourg's "Le Poinçonneur des Lilas".
He went on stage with a glass of whiskey and a packet of cigarettes
(Marlboro light for those who are curious) and he started with "Everybody's
Weird" followed by "Right as Rain". The sound was
perfect and the lights were delicate and soft: a very relaxed atmosphere.
When Guy Van Nueten entered the stage to play the piano, Tom put
his guitar aside and together they performed three Nick Drake songs:
"Fruit Tree", "River Man" and the beautiful
"Pink Moon".
Barman sang with his eyes shut as if he intended to say that the
audience should do the same. Next they performed "Instant Street",
"Magdalena" and "Serpentine" (beautiful with
Guy on piano). Tom also played two new songs, the new single "Nothing
Really Ends" and "Luxury", a song in the classical
dEUS style, a kind of "Fell Off The Floor, Man".
At the end Tom began to joke and asked the audience if they had
some requests and people answered with "Roses", "Disappointed
In The Sun", "Suds and Soda", "Opening Night",
"Secret Hell" ("it's been such a long time"
Tom said), "Hotellounge" and other requests. But he decided
to play a very nice version of "Sister Dew" and then left
the stage.
It was an exciting concert that celebrated the talent and voice
of Tom Barman and maybe this will be his future after dEUS. Let's
hope so.
