[27MAY1999] L'Aéronef, Lille (F)
I have the sad feeling that this gig would have been awesome hadn't it been that hot inside the Aéronef that night ... dEUS started with a stunning rock'n'roll trilogy which was a winner choice because the crowd moved frantically from the very beginning. Brilliant start, indeed. But already after Little Arithmetics Tom complained about the heat and from then on it was obvious that they were bothered by that fact. Either Tom was a little drunk, either his French isn't as good as in the past, but the comments he made to introduce the songs made practically no sense at all. The audience didn't react to Sam Peckinpah very much, I think that's because it's a B-side, and therefore, instead of going on with that song, they broke and started Suds & Soda - the effect was just HUGE. The slower version they played of Everybody's Weird was the best I've heard to this day and the light show was great - strong contrast with Roses where they were not impressive at all. They came back on stage after 3 minutes of noisy clapping and then I got bored ... In my opinion, they didn't want to be cooked anymore and gave us two encores because, well, it's something good bands do :) They dropped two excellent songs from The Ideal Crash they usually play, i.e. One Advice, Space and Dream Sequence and there was no conviction anymore, and the Dewaele brother who joined them during Turnpike and W.C.S. didn't help - I had the feeling that Tommie wasn't entirely satisfied with his presence on stage ... Oh, a Dewaele brother is a member of Gent band Soulwax who started off the night, excellent show I must say ! |
