This was the first single from In A Bar,
Under The Sea, 4 months before the album was released.
The jazzy sample which loops in the background
is taken from "Far Wells, Mill Valley", a song by
Charles Mingus. It's also used by Neven, a Brussels band that
plays dance music.
New Jersey Turnpike is one of the most famous
American highways, and the oldest if I'm not mistaken. Funny
interpretation of the song by a member of the dEUS mailing
list : Theme From Turnpike is about Bryan Adams, 'cause
he's from New Jersey, and he got it all "counterclockwise"
:)
The video shows two men walking along the
Champs Elysées in Paris. They are Seymour Cassel (a
comedian) and Sam Loewyck, a crazy dancer from Les Ballets
C de B. It was showed in some Belgian theatres as a short
film right before Trainspotting. It was censored by MTV who
argued that Mr Loewyck's dance is a parody of an epilepsy
crisis. This might explain why MTV hardly ever play a dEUS
video, while MCM do it all the time. The idea behind the video
was to make it the introduction to a full-length movie called
Turnpike, even though there is no such movie. It was
shot on 35 mm film.
