The dEUS dictionary (a kinda FAQ file)
A Beatband

First band formed by Stef Kamil Carlens in 1991. It's actually the same band as Moondog Jr, but before it was called Moondog Jr.

Antwerp / Antwerpen / Anvers

Antwerp is dEUS's hometown. For the really unaware, Antwerp is one of Europe's largest ports and is the most populated Belgian town. It has the highest concentration of musical creativity, and unfortunately the highest racist voting rate of the country ... But Antwerp is among the most beautiful cities on the Old Continent.

BANG!

BANG! is a small Belgian record company that worked with dEUS from 1993 (the digipak release of the Zea EP) to the middle of 1998, when dEUS signed directly with Polygram/Universal. It is said that Universal paid 500,000 euros to get rid of the BANG! contract.
BANG! was originally based in Namur (French speaking part of Belgium) but moved to Brussels when dEUS started growing bigger. Besides dEUS they also distributed in Belgium the bands on 62TV Records (Mad Dog Loose among others) and several indie bands including Pavement.

David Bottrill

David Bottrill is the producer of The Ideal Crash. He produced several albums by Peter Gabriel and Tool. He's also known for having worked with Eddi Reader, and on some Robert Fripp projects (besides King Crimson), such as one with David Sylvian on which Ingrid Chavez sung. Which links everything to Prince, since he produced Ingrid Chavez' first album at the time. And as we all know Prince is Tom's all-time favourite artist ! (thanks to Frank van der Linden for this info)

Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung

DAAU is a young Antwerp-based neoclassical combo. They play a mix of rock, folk and classical music with some electronic effects. They use a violin, a cello, a flute and a set of drums. In 1994 they recorded a cover of Suds & Soda which appeared on a special version of the Suds & Soda single.

Dead Man Ray [http://www.deadmanray.com]

Another band created by Rudy Trouvé, this time with Daan Stuyven, Elko Blijweert and drummer Herman Houbrechts. They had a hit in Belgium in 1998 with Chemical and they released a brilliant debut album very influenced by the 80's. In 1999 they wrote a soundtrack for two old Flemish movies. Daan went solo for a beautiful album called Profools.

En Frente Arte

A hotel in beautiful Ronda (Spain) that Musickness bought. They made it a place for artists with a recording studio. This is where dEUS wrote and recorded The Ideal Crash. I don't know if the hotel is open to anybody, but if you plan to go to Spain, why not try to stay at that legendary place ? :)

Oh, "Saneamiento Ronda" on the Ideal Crash and Instant Street CD's is the street lid of the sewers in the town of Ronda, "saneamiento" actually means "sewers". dEUS = rubbish ?

Evil Superstars

An ex-band formed in Hasselt by Mauro Pawlowski. Truly great music & band which came to an end in September 1998. They were dEUS' support act on numerous occasions and Tom is a great fan of their music. The Evils gained some glory with B.A.B.Y. and It's A Sad Sad Planet which both received extansive airplay. Guitarist Tim Vanhamel joined them in 1995 (he was 17) and is now in dEUS. Mauro has been touring with Mitsoobishy Jacson in 1999.

Eyckmans, Filip

He has been dEUS manager since 1991, he formed Jack & Johnny which became Musickness in 1994.

General Electrique [http://www.amphion.net/cinerex/]

From Cinérex's official site :

"Late august 1994, Tom Barman and Kelvin Smits got together to start what would turn out to be a clash between pop, dance and rock; subtitle General Electrique!
Tom Barman, currently regarded as one of the leading musicians in Belgium following the success of his group dEUS, got together with Kelvin. They intermingled beats with guitars and in doing so, created the foundation of what would later become known as Cinérex. On the forthcoming album "Exit all areas", two tracks lead us back to that General Electrique period i.e. Feminax and Blow tenderly. Don't forget to listen to excerpts of these tracks found under the section MUSIC on this site!"

Gore Slut [Rudy's Great Ideas]

Rudy Trouvé's noisiest band. It was formed in 1991 with Jacki Billet (bass) & two Tom's. Their music is very influenced by 70's psychedelic rock. Craig Ward was an early member.

Heavenhotel

Rudy Trouvé's label. The Heavenhotel was originally an old brothel in Antwerp where dEUS lived together for a while. Now it is a kind of association which Rudy uses to release CD's of Kiss My Jazz, Dead Man Ray, Daan, Gore Slut, Lionel Horrowitz, and also to set up art exhibitions.

Island Records Ltd. [http://www.island.co.uk]

dEUS were offered a contract with Island in 1994 after several stunning gigs in Britain. Island is a worldwide label for U2, Pulp, Tricky & also for Moondog Jr. The company was taken over by Universal in 1998. Unfortunately, Island are not interested in promoting dEUS outside Europe.

Jack & Johnny

The first draft of Musickness before it was called Musickness. That tiny label was formed by dEUS' manager Filip Eyckmans to release dEUS & A Beatband's first EP's.

Kiss My Jazz [Rudy's Great Ideas]

Kiss My Jazz is probably Belgium's most interesting music project. It is based on a hard core of 6 or 7 musicians, and 6 to 12 more who join them on stage or in a recording studio. The obvious leader is Rudy Trouvé who created the band in 1991 with Stef Kamil Carlens, Craig Ward, Aarich Jespers (drummer in Zita Swoon), Jacki Billet (bass), Elko Blijweert (guitar) & Heyme Langbroek (trumpet). Their music consists of a lot of great improvisation about love stories. They played their last gigs in January 2000 and split up.

Stef Kamil Carlens's band from 1993 to 1997, with Tom Pintens, Benjamin Boutreur, Aarich Jespers & Thomas De Smet. It was previously called A Beatband and changed name again for Zita Swoon in 1997.

Musickness [http://www.musickness.be]

dEUS' management. It was formed by manager Filip Eyckmans in 1991 and was first called Jack & Johnny. Musickness also manage(d) Evil Superstars, DAAU, Dead Man Ray and helped Rudy Trouvé create his own label (Heavenhotel). Story (thanks to Bart Van Belle) :

There's an interview with Filip Eyckman, the founder of Musickness in Teek Magazine of February He tells about the beginning of the management.

Did anybody know that the name Musickness was a idea of Tommy ?
It refers to music, sickness and business !!! Definitely not Danny's idea :-)

And Jack & Johny ? Well, Jack refers to Jacky Ickx, because Christian the co - founder is a danger on the road and John refers to Filip, because everybody called him 'den John'. Tiens, just wondering ? Tommy said something about a song for Johny's last week. Maybe Turnpike is dedicated to Filip !!!

SexmAchines [absolute danny page]

Danny "Cool Rocket" Mommens's punkrock band. I think it's more or less a dead thing.

tENERIFE

A true myth. A great mystery. I only know one song, and I wish I knew dozens more. Are they dEUS? Ah ... dEUS played several gigs under the name tENERIFE in 1996. Or was it 1997? Anyway, it was without Klaas or Stef, but Danny was with them. The song I've heard is called "Cut Me Down", I don't even know if it's a cover. You can listen to it on the Absolute Danny page

The Frames

Craig Ward has worked with this Irish band on their next album which will be out in February 2001. He produced the album and played guitar on several tracks. The Frames are dEUS fans, they already covered Hotellounge.

Vive La Fête [absolute danny page]

Bassist Danny Mommens's band with girlfriend Els Pynoo. A kinda 80's easy-listening thing with cheesy synths and an amusing attempt to sing in French.

Zita Swoon [The unofficial Zita Swoon homepage]

Stef Kamil Carlens's band today. It is the same as Moondog Jr but with Bjorn Eriksson instead of Benjamin Boutreur since 1998. They have a more creative approach than dEUS because they do not only play gigs. In 1997 they wrote (with Klaas from dEUS) an original soundtrack for 1927 Murnau's film Sunrise: a song of Two Humans and they played it live (the Sunrise tour). In the autumn of 1999 they played music and acted in a weird music/dance performance called Plage Tattoo.
